Kochi: A 17-year-old boy, the son of an additional district judge, who was taken into custody after a luxury car hit and killed a scooter rider in Cheranalloor, Ernakulam, has been granted bail. The Juvenile Justice Board granted him bail.

The victim, Jayabalakrishnan, 55, of Puthenparambil House in Manjali, was killed when the luxury car allegedly driven at high speed by the teenager struck his scooter. The boy was driving a Mercedes-Benz bearing registration number KL 46 F 0333.

After taking the teenager into custody, police initially released him on station bail. Police had registered the case under minor charges following the accident. Organisations, including the DYFI, staged protests against what they described as the police attempt to protect the accused. Following the protests, the teenager was taken into custody again around midnight and produced before the Juvenile Justice Board.

The incident comes before the shock of another fatal crash in Nedumbassery, where three people were killed after a Mini Cooper driven by a 19-year-old allegedly under the influence of alcohol hit them.

The accident in Cheranalloor occurred around 2.20 am on Sunday near the Maraparambu bus stop on Container Road. Jayabalakrishnan was returning home on his scooter after closing his shop when the Mercedes-Benz, allegedly driven recklessly at high speed, hit the scooter from behind. He was thrown onto the road and suffered serious injuries to his head and legs.

Protesting the grant of bail to the accused, Jayabalakrishnan’s family members staged a sit-in at the Cheranalloor police station at night.

His body was kept for public viewing at his house in Manjali and his ancestral home in South Chittoor before being cremated at the Pachalam crematorium.

He is survived by his wife, Bindu, and children Bharath Shankar, Bhagyadarshan and Bhadra Keerthi.
