Kochi: The Kerala government has taken action against police officials following the Cheranalloor accident. Kochi City Police Commissioner Kalaraj Mahesh is transferred. R Nishanthini will take over as the new Kochi Police Commissioner, while P Prakash will become the Inspector General of Police for the Southern Range. Prakash will continue to hold charge of the State Crime Records Bureau (SCRB). The government issued an order to this effect on the instructions of the Home Minister.

The transfer follows disciplinary action taken on Tuesday against police personnel over lapses in the case in which a 55-year-old man was killed after being hit by a Mercedes-Benz driven by a 17-year-old son of an Additional District Judge.

Four police personnel, including the Circle Inspector and Station House Officer of the Cheranalloor police station, were suspended. Those suspended are CI Shyam Kumar, SHO Vishwajith, Grade Sub-Inspector Manoj and Civil Police Officer Arun Jith.

The suspensions followed the Home Minister’s intervention and directions for strict action against the officers.
