Thiruvalla (Pathanamthitta): A massive fire broke out at a Kerala State Beverages Corporation (Bevco) outlet located at the Pamba River Factory in Pulikeezh, Thiruvalla, on Tuesday night, leading to extensive damage. According to preliminary estimates, the loss is expected to be between 5 crore and 10 crore rupees.
The fire, which erupted around 8 PM, completely destroyed the outlet building and its adjoining godown. Police said the structure was gutted in the blaze, and liquor worth several lakhs — possibly crores — was reduced to ashes. The outlet reportedly had a stock of 45,000 cases of liquor, with each case containing around nine litres.
Initial investigations suggest that welding work at the rear side of the building may have triggered the fire. Constructed with aluminum sheets, the structure was quickly engulfed in flames. Alert staff members managed to flee the premises in time, and no casualties have been reported. Fire and Rescue units from Thiruvalla, Chengannur, and Mavelikkara rushed to the scene and brought the blaze under control after several hours of effort.
Bevco Managing Director Harshitha Attaluri confirmed the extent of the damage and stated that both the building and the stock were insured. “Insurance claims will be processed at the earliest. In light of this incident, security audits will be conducted at all Bevco godowns across the state,” she said.
Police have launched an investigation into the cause of the fire, and Bevco is also conducting an internal inquiry. The exact cause will be determined only after a detailed forensic examination, authorities added.
