Thiruvananthapuram: CPI(M) General Secretary M.A. Baby on Saturday strongly condemned the United States’ attack on Venezuela, calling it a blatant act of imperialist aggression and accusing Washington of behaving like a rogue state.

Speaking to reporters at a press conference here, Baby said the real objective behind the military action was to bring Venezuela under American domination. Warning of its wider implications, he said what has happened to Venezuela today could happen to other countries tomorrow. He described the attack as a clear violation of international law and called for strong and united public resistance against such acts of aggression.

Referring to reports from Venezuela, Baby said U.S. forces had carried out attacks in several parts of the country and that President Nicolas Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, had allegedly been abducted by American troops. He added that the United States itself was claiming that they were in its custody. “The biggest threat to the world today is the U.S. administration under Trump,” he said.

M.A. Baby noted that Venezuela has consistently refused to submit to American dominance and has maintained economic and trade relations with countries that Washington considers adversaries. He said the U.S., despite intervening in multiple global conflicts without achieving any meaningful success, was now turning its attention to Venezuela. Apart from its imperialist outlook, he added, the United States also has clear oil and economic interests in the country.

Raising serious concerns over India’s response, Baby questioned the Union government’s silence on the U.S. attack. He pointed out that India and Venezuela share close ties at various levels and noted that both countries are founding members of the International Solar Alliance. He also referred to the cooperation between Venezuela and India’s public sector enterprise ONGC Videsh in oil and natural gas exploration.

Criticising the Indian government for failing to condemn the attack so far, Baby described the silence as shameful. He said there was growing concern over what India might say if it chose to break its silence. Recalling India’s long-standing position during the freedom struggle, he said the country had traditionally upheld a strong anti-imperialist stance, but that these principles were gradually being diluted.

Calling on the Union government to take a clear and principled stand, M.A.Baby urged India to uphold its anti-imperialist tradition and express solidarity with Venezuela in the face of U.S. aggression.
