Washington DC: The United States has deployed a second aircraft carrier to the Middle East, heightening concerns about the possibility of conflict in the region. The USS Gerald R Ford, along with an escort ship, has departed from the Caribbeans and is now heading towards Iran, the New York Times reports. This follows an earlier statement from President Donald Trump, who had announced the deployment of the aircraft carrier to the region as he pressures Iran to make a deal over its nuclear program.

Currently stationed in the Middle East, the USS Abraham Lincoln is accompanied by a large military contingent, further escalating tensions in the region. President Trump warned that the consequences would be severe if a deal between the US and Iran is not reached.

The USS Gerald R Ford, the world’s largest aircraft carrier, left the Caribbean Sea for the Middle East in response to rising concerns over Iran’s actions. The deployment comes ahead of planned talks between the US and Iran, which are expected to take place in Geneva. Last week, Iran attempted to intercept a US-flagged vessel in the Strait of Hormuz, a strategic waterway. In a separate incident, the US military reported shooting down an Iranian drone that came dangerously close to the USS Abraham Lincoln.

The increased US military presence in the region reflects mounting anxieties over potential hostilities, with both sides preparing for an uncertain future as diplomatic talks loom. Meanwhile, the Gulf countries have already already warned that any conflict between the two countries could spill over the region which is still reeling from the Israel-Hamas war in Gaza.
