New Delhi: The World Health Organisation (WHO) has confirmed the discovery of two new variants of the Mpox virus in both India and the UK. These genetically modified variants contain genetic material from previously reported variants. WHO has called for continuous genetic monitoring of individuals affected by the virus.

The new variants were identified in a UK national who traveled to a Southeast Asian country and in an Indian national who traveled to the Arabian Peninsula. The disease was confirmed within weeks of travel. WHO states that there may be similar cases that have not been reported. No severe effects have been reported in the patients so far due to the new variant.

Symptoms

Mpox, previously known as monkeypox, is a viral infection. The initial symptoms resemble those of the flu, including fever, headache, muscle pain, and fatigue. Subsequently, a distinct rash will appear anywhere on the body, including the face, genital area, and anus. The rash progresses through several stages.

Disease Preventive Measures

There is a risk of transmission of the disease from an infected person, especially someone with a rash. Transmission can occur by touching contaminated items such as mattresses, handkerchiefs, or clothes. Prolonged face-to-face contact, such as through respiratory droplets, can also lead to the spread of infection.

To reduce the risk of transmission, hands should be washed frequently with water and soap. Physical contact with infected individuals should be avoided. Those who experience symptoms should seek medical attention immediately. Additionally, precautions should be taken to prevent spreading the disease to others.
