Washington DC: Following the abduction and detention of Venezuelan President Nicols Maduro and his wife in New York, US President Donald Trump has issued a threat against Cuba. Trump warned that unless Cuba enters into an agreement with the United States at the earliest, it will no longer receive oil or money from Venezuela.

Taking to his Truth Social platform, President Trump made it clear that the era of Venezuelan subsidies keeping the Cuban economy afloat is over. He also added that if Cuba does not reach an agreement with the US immediately, it will receive nothing further from Venezuela.

Venezuela is Cuba’s largest supplier of oil. Shipping data indicates that since the Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro was taken into custody by the US military in early January, no cargo has left Venezuelan ports for Cuba. Meanwhile, discussions are underway between Caracas and Washington regarding a 2 billion dollar oil agreement. Under this proposed deal, 50 million barrels of Venezuelan oil would be supplied to the United States, with the revenue deposited into special accounts overseen by the US Treasury. This move is seen as a critical test of the emerging diplomatic relationship between the US administration and Venezuelan leadership under American control.

Meanwhile, Cuban President Miguel Diaz-Canel strongly rejected Trump’s threat through social media, stating that the US has no moral authority to force an agreement on Cuba. “Cuba is a free and sovereign nation. No one can dictate what we should do. Cuba does not attack anyone; rather, the United States has been attacking Cuba for 66 years. We are not threatening—we are preparing to resist, ready to defend our homeland to the last drop of blood,” Diaz-Canel wrote on X.
