Paris: US President Donald Trump has threatened to abandon the preliminary agreement reached with Iran and resume bombing the country if he finds Tehran's conduct unsatisfactory, delivering the provocative statement on the sidelines of the G7 summit in France.
"This is just a memorandum of understanding. If I don't like it, or if they don't behave, we'll start dropping bombs over their heads again — right in the middle," Trump told reporters, in remarks that laid bare the coercive underpinning of Washington's negotiating posture.
Trump further stated that the preliminary agreement contains no provision for the immediate lifting of economic sanctions on Iran, taking a categorically negative position on the issue and saying sanctions could be discussed at a later stage.
The remarks come as a formal signing ceremony related to the restoration of shipping traffic through the Strait of Hormuz is scheduled to take place in Switzerland — making Trump's latest outburst, which diplomats say violates every norm of international conduct, particularly striking in its timing.
