Bangkok: A 63-year-old woman was rescued from rubble in Myanmar’s capital, Naypyitaw, 91 hours after a 7.7-magnitude earthquake struck on Friday. However, hopes are fading as the death toll climbs to 2,719, with 4,521 injured and 441 missing, per state media.
The quake, the second-strongest in Myanmar’s history, caused widespread destruction, leaving many areas without power or communication. Over 10,000 buildings collapsed or were severely damaged, trapping victims like 50 monks killed in a monastery collapse.
Rescue efforts are hampered by limited heavy machinery, though international teams from China, Russia, and others are assisting. The U.S. pledged $2 million in aid, while the UN warns of disease risks due to damaged infrastructure and overcrowded shelters.
Myanmar’s ongoing civil war further complicates relief. While opposition groups declared ceasefires, the military has not committed to halting operations. Concerns remain over aid access, given the junta’s history of restricting foreign assistance after disasters.Monsoon rains loom, worsening conditions for displaced survivors. The UN estimates over 3 million were already displaced before the quake, deepening the humanitarian crisis.
