Tehran: The late Ayatollah Ali Khamenei was succeeded by his son, Mojtaba Khamenei, as the Supreme Leader of Iran. International media reported that the decision was made by Iran's Supreme body, the Assembly of Experts. The new announcement comes as the country is undergoing a major political crisis following the death of Ayatollah Khamenei on February 28.
Mojtaba's election is reportedly backed by strong support from Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps. While Mojtaba Khamenei, who is 56 years old, has held key positions in the country, he did not previously hold any official titles.
Currently, administrative matters are being handled by a temporary committee headed by President Masoud Pezeshkian. The government believes that the country’s uncertainty will be resolved with the election of a new leader.
