London: Keir Starmer has announced that he will step down as Prime Minister and leader of the Labour Party, bringing an abrupt end to a premiership that began with a commanding election victory in 2024 but later became overshadowed by internal unrest and declining political support.
Starmer emerged from 10 Downing Street alongside his wife before delivering a resignation address in which he reflected on entering office less than two years ago, describing that moment as the highest point of his political career. He said his decision to enter public life had been driven by a desire to improve people’s lives across Britain.
In his farewell remarks, Starmer defended his government’s record and pointed to what he described as progress across several sectors. He highlighted economic growth, wage increases outpacing inflation, investment initiatives, infrastructure expansion and shorter waiting times in the National Health Service. He also cited reforms aimed at strengthening workers’ and renters’ rights, increased defence spending, efforts to reduce irregular small-boat arrivals and policies intended to lower child poverty.
His departure follows months of turbulence inside Labour party, marked by criticism over policy shifts, falling approval ratings and growing unease among MPs and ministers over the government’s direction.
Starmer is expected to remain in office until a successor is selected, with a leadership contest now set to shape the future direction of Labour party and the British government.
