Tehran: Iran said on Monday that a recently agreed framework with the United States to end the West Asian conflict does not erase decades of distrust, even as both sides move forward with efforts to stabilise the region and reopen the Strait of Hormuz.

Speaking during a press briefing, Iranian foreign ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baqaei said relations remain shaped by what Tehran sees as a long record of American actions that have damaged confidence. He described the new understanding as an initial measure aimed at lowering tensions rather than a sign of restored trust.

The comments came after Washington and Tehran announced a broad framework intended to bring an end to the regional conflict that erupted earlier this year and restore normal maritime movement through the Strait of Hormuz, a critical route for global energy supplies.

Baqaei said the agreement includes American commitments to facilitate the release of Iranian assets frozen abroad and address damages linked to the war. He identified those issues as central to Tehran’s acceptance of the framework.

On the future of the Strait of Hormuz, Iran maintained that it would continue overseeing navigation in the waterway. Tehran said vessels would not face transit tolls but would be subject to service-related charges tied to navigation support, environmental protection and maritime insurance.

Iran also linked the agreement to developments in Lebanon, saying Washington must ensure that Israel complies with commitments to halt military operations there.

The framework is expected to open a 60-day negotiating period focused on Iran’s nuclear programme and sanctions relief. Iranian officials said any final settlement should eventually receive endorsement through a United Nations Security Council resolution while stressing that Tehran would rely on practical guarantees rather than promises alone.
