New York: Tech billionaire Elon Musk has announced the creation of a new political party, the America Party, vowing to "give Americans their freedom back" following a dramatic fallout with former US President Donald Trump.

The Tesla and SpaceX CEO made the declaration on his social media platform X, stating: "Today, the America Party is formed to give you back your freedom.' Musk criticised the existing political landscape, saying: "When it comes to bankrupting our country with waste and graft, we live in a one-party system, not a democracy.'

While Musk has not yet confirmed whether the party has been officially registered, there is currently no indication from the Federal Election Commission (FEC) that such a filing has been made, according to CNN.

The idea of forming a new political entity first emerged during Musk’s public dispute with Trump. The feud escalated after Musk resigned from his position in the administration’s Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) and became an outspoken critic of Trump’s policies, particularly his recent tax and spending bill, which Musk argued would balloon the federal deficit by trillions of dollars. The legislation was narrowly passed and signed into law this week.

Referencing a poll he conducted on X during the feud, Musk noted that a majority of respondents supported the creation of a new party: "By a factor of 2 to 1, you want a new political party, and you shall have it!'

Once a close adviser to Trump and the single largest individual donor to his 2024 campaign, Musk’s departure from the Trump camp marks a major political shift. His vision for the America Party is centered on fiscal conservatism and reducing government spending, though he has yet to provide detailed policy positions.

Musk has said the party aims to become politically active during next year’s midterm elections, initially backing a limited number of candidates for House and Senate seats.

In response, Trump has reportedly threatened to review federal contracts awarded to Musk’s companies. He also took aim at the Department of Government Efficiency, calling it a "monster" that might "go back and eat Elon.'

While dissatisfaction with the US two-party system is widespread among both Democrats and Republicans, third-party efforts have historically struggled to gain traction. Musk appears determined to challenge that pattern with his latest political venture.
