Thiruvananthapuram, May 20, 2025 — The Drugs Control Department has taken strict action against a private hospital in Kerala for selling physician’s sample medicines—meant to be distributed free of cost—at inflated prices. The incident occurred at Doctors Speciality Hospital, located in Nilakkamukku, Kadakkavoor, in Thiruvananthapuram district.

An inspection led by the department’s intelligence wing uncovered that the hospital had stocked several medicines clearly marked as “Physician’s Sample — Not for Sale” and was illegally selling them at high prices. In addition to the unauthorized sale of sample medicines, the hospital was also found to be charging above the permissible rates for several drugs.

Following the inspection, the seized medicines and related records were submitted to the Varkala Magistrate Court, and further legal proceedings are underway.

Health Minister Veena George responded strongly to the incident, stating, “Strict action will be taken against anyone found selling physician’s samples or overcharging for medicines. This is a serious violation that exploits the public and undermines the ethics of the healthcare system.”

She also urged the public to remain vigilant and report such malpractice to the Drugs Control Department.

Those who wish to report complaints can contact the department through the toll-free helpline: 1800 425 3182.

The Minister emphasized that “the government will continue strict and regular inspections to ensure accountability and protect public health.”

The surprise inspection was carried out based on a tip-off and was conducted under the directive of the State Drugs Controller. The operation was led by the Assistant Drug Controller of the Intelligence Branch and coordinated by a team comprising Drugs Inspector Praveen (Zone 3), Chief Inspector of the Drugs Intelligence Squad Vinod V, Drugs Inspector (SIB) Maniveena M.G., and Drugs Inspector Aji S. The government has reiterated its commitment to curb unethical practices in the medical sector and assured that violators will face the full force of the law.
