Madurai: Polit Bureau member Manik Sarkar, presiding over the inaugural session of the CPI(M)'s 24th Party Congress in Madurai, emphasized the need for a united front of secular and democratic forces against the BJP-RSS regime’s authoritarian policies. He called for strengthening resistance movements, stating that the Congress would focus on intensifying struggles for the rights of workers, minorities, and the oppressed.
Sarkar analyzed the current political landscape, warning of heightened American imperialist aggression under Donald Trump’s leadership and the deepening alliance between the Modi government’s Hindutva authoritarianism and corporate capital. This nexus has eroded democracy, secularism, and federalism, leading to skyrocketing unemployment, inflation, agrarian distress, and institutionalized corruption.
“The resistance to the Hindutva-corporate regime has been ongoing. Every section of working people is coming out to defend their rights. In this connection, I salute the workers of the Samsung India factory, who conducted a successful 38-day strike in Kancheepuram, braving all forms of repression,” Sarkar said.
Addressing the Congress, Sarkar emphasized the need for the Party to play a pivotal role in shaping the future of the Left and democratic movements in India. “The 24th Congress will discuss how to widen and intensify the struggles of the working class, peasantry, urban and rural poor, and champion the rights of Dalits, Adivasis, women, and minorities. We will also focus on enhancing the independent strength of the Party through political, ideological, and organizational activities,” he added.
In his concluding remarks, Sarkar called for a robust Party organization capable of connecting with people at the grassroots level. “A strong Party organization is essential to mobilize millions of working people and youth to confront and defeat the forces of reaction. We must expand our reach to workplaces and residential areas to launch sustained struggles for the working people,” he said.
The Congress, taking place in the historic city of Madurai, is set to chart the course for future struggles against the forces undermining India’s democratic and secular fabric. With over 800 delegates, including 80 observers, attending the session, the Congress is expected to formulate strategies for building a formidable Left and democratic alternative in the country’s political landscape.
