Thiruvananthapuram: Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan said that the passing of legendary actor, screenwriter and director Sreenivasan is an irreparable loss to Malayalam cinema, describing him as a rare talent who rose to a leading position across every sphere of filmmaking.

In his condolence message, the Chief Minister said Sreenivasan was among the very few filmmakers who succeeded so powerfully in portraying the life of the ordinary human being on the silver screen, while breaking many long-standing conventions in Malayalam films.

The Chief Minister noted that Sreenivasan possessed the rare courage to present his ideas with wit and elegance, fully aware that they could invite strong criticism. “Even those who strongly disagreed with his viewpoints respected the brilliance of his talent,” he added.

Vijayan said Sreenivasan made conscious efforts to transform the emotional and intellectual sensibilities of Malayalam cinema audiences. “He was a filmmaker who successfully articulated his social perspectives through satire and sharp humour,” the Chief Minister observed.

From story writing and screenplays to direction and acting, Sreenivasan worked across multiple domains of cinema, leaving a distinct personal imprint in each. “The characters he created and portrayed in numerous films will remain etched forever in the minds of Malayalis,” CM added.

He said Sreenivasan, with whom he shared a warm personal rapport, came across as a symbol of affection and friendship. “Born and raised in Padiyam in Kannur district, Sreenivasan transformed his passion for cinema into reality through sheer self-effort. His life is a textbook for all those who believe in hard work and perseverance,” the Chief Minister said in his message.

Tributes continue to pour in from across Kerala’s cultural and political spheres, underscoring Sreenivasan’s enduring legacy as a filmmaker who combined laughter, criticism and humanity to redefine Malayalam cinema.
