Thiruvananthapuram: Kerala Minister Saji Cheriyan described the passing of veteran actor, screenwriter, and director Sreenivasan as an irreplaceable loss for Malayalam cinema, calling him “one of the most extraordinary talents Kerala has ever seen.”

Cheriyan said that over more than three decades in the film industry, Sreenivasan consistently amazed audiences in multiple roles, establishing himself as a true multi-talented artist. “He was a living example of what it means to be a multifaceted talent,” the minister added.

Highlighting Sreenivasan’s unique contribution, Cheriyan said, “No other artist has portrayed the life experiences of ordinary people on screen with such sincerity and simplicity. Numerous films that reshaped Malayalam cinema were born from his pen.”

Films like Nadodikattu, Varavelppu, Mithunam, and Pattanapravesham continue to resonate with audiences because of the acute human insight Sreenivasan brought to his characters. As a director, films like Vadakkunokkiyantram and Chinthavishtayaya Shyamala elevated the artistic standards of Malayalam cinema.

Cheriyan noted that Sreenivasan’s characters were so relatable that they felt like members of every Malayali household. “Sreenivasan used humour not just for laughter, but as a bridge to thought, influencing the social consciousness of Kerala audiences,” he said.

He added, “Sreenivasan observed life keenly and transformed it into art without any exaggeration. His departure is an irreparable loss to the Malayalam film world. The grief is deeply felt by his family as well as countless cinema lovers across the state.”

Sreenivasan, who passed away at Tripunithura Taluk Hospital on Saturday morning, leaves behind his wife Vimala and sons Vineeth Sreenivasan and Dhyan Sreenivasan, along with a legacy that continues to inspire generations of filmmakers and audiences alike.
