Shanghai: Formula One and its governing body, the Fédération Internationale de l'Automobile (FIA), have announced that the Grand Prix races scheduled in Bahrain and Saudi Arabia in April will not take place due to safety concerns arising from the ongoing conflict in West Asia.

The announcement was made early Sunday morning in Shanghai ahead of the Chinese Grand Prix. Formula One stated that, considering the current situation in the region, the Bahrain Grand Prix scheduled for April 12 and the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix scheduled for April 19 would not be held in April. The organization added that several alternatives had been explored but it was ultimately decided that no replacement races would be organized during that period.

Stefano Domenicali, president and CEO of F1, said that although the decision was difficult, it was the right one given the present circumstances in West Asia. The FIA also confirmed that the two races would not take place in April and emphasized that the safety and well-being of everyone involved in the sport remains its top priority.

FIA President Mohammed Ben Sulayem said the organization always places the safety of the racing community first and that the decision was taken after careful consideration. He also noted that Bahrain and Saudi Arabia remain very important to the Formula One season and expressed hope that racing would return to both countries as soon as conditions allow.

The statement did not explicitly describe the races as cancelled or postponed, leaving open the possibility that they could be rescheduled later in the season. However, Formula One’s tightly packed calendar makes it difficult to find new dates for the events. If the races are not rescheduled, the championship calendar will have a five-week gap between the Japanese Grand Prix on March 29 and the Miami Grand Prix on May 3, reducing the season to 22 races.
