Thrissur: The 64th Kerala School Arts Festival opened with grandeur at Thrissur, beginning with a dance performance inspired by the song “Pooraam Kaanan Poru”. The combination of the song’s rhythm and lyrical strength created a wave of excitement among the audience, with the six-minute dance performed by students from the Kalamandalam captivating viewers.

The performance celebrated Kerala’s cultural heritage and artistic legacy, incorporating iconic elements of the Pooraam festival such as elephants, percussion, and chenda. The choreography also blended semi-classical dance, Thillana, Kathakali padams, Jathika, and chenda, with over 30 students from Plus One and Plus Two classes participating under the guidance of Kalamandalam dance instructors.

The lyrics, written by B K Harinarayanan, were arranged and performed by Manikandan Ayyappan alongside M K Nishad, Sannidanandan, Indulekha Warrier, and Sadanam Jyothi Kumar. The performance skillfully integrated Kerala’s classical and folk art forms, including Mohiniyattam, Margam Kali, Oppana, and Chavittu Natakam, symbolizing the state’s secular and cultural unity.

Organizers described the presentation as a grand welcome for the new generation, highlighting how Thrissur continues to celebrate and pass on Kerala’s rich artistic and cultural traditions to its youth.
