Water Crisis in Capital: Corporation Fails to Address Shortages

Thiruvananthapuram: In the state capital, the corporation is pulling the people under pressure by not providing enough water. The ongoing repairs at the Aruvikkara water treatment plant have caused a disruption in the water supply, and the BJP-led administration is not ready to address the issue, leaving the public in distress. Hundreds of people who had booked for drinking water have not received it yet. There are strong accusations that the free drinking water distribution is not effective. The mayor, who was regularly seen in the media about the street dog issue, has been absent for several days.

Families dependent on the Water Authority's supply are facing a situation where they do not have water even for basic needs. The crisis is severe in areas like Vazhuthakkad, Statue, and Thampanoor.

In previous years, during similar water shortages, the corporation used to provide free drinking water, even delivering it by tanker as requested by households. With all these systems failing now, hotels and hostels are facing disruptions in their operations. Despite the severe drinking water shortage, the corporation is not taking action, according to the complaints of the people. Ajith, a resident of Thampanoor, says that they are now buying expensive bottled water for cooking.

The corporation claims that the drinking water distribution system is functioning effectively and that they receive over a hundred calls daily. However, they admit that they lack the vehicles to deliver water to so many people. Even at the vending point in PTP Nagar, water is not available. As a result, there will be delays in the free drinking water distribution, the corporation has informed.

Transformer Fault Fixed by Water Authority

The Water Authority has fixed the fault in the transformer of the 72 MLD plant at Aruvikkara. Despite efforts by KSEB, the issue could not be resolved, and a transformer was brought from Kozhikode on Sunday to complete the repair work. Two of the four plants had faults. The 75 MLD water treatment plant has resumed operation after fixing a cable issue.

Due to repairs being carried out on a broken 200 HP pump at the 16 MLD water treatment plant at Kundaman Kadavu under the PTP Subdivision, complete water supply disruptions have occurred in various areas. Areas such as Kanjirampara, Pangode, Vattiyurkkavu, Vazhotukonam, Nettayam, Kaachani, Malamukal, Kodungannur, Thirumala, Valiyavila, Punnayakamukal, Thrikkannapuram, Thuruthummoola, and wards including Poojappura, Melarannur, Karamana, Pai Road, Kaladi, Nedungad, Killippalam, and Pappanamkode have been without water for several days. The Water Authority has issued a warning to consumers to take precautions. It is expected that the issue will be resolved by Monday.
