New Delhi: The central government has announced that the capacity of train services from major cities across the country will be doubled over the next five years.
As part of this initiative, 48 cities have been selected, but from Kerala, only Kochi has made the list. While most major state capitals are included, Thiruvananthapuram has been left out. Meanwhile, nine cities from BJP-ruled Uttar Pradesh and five cities from Bihar are part of the plan.
In addition to increasing the number of trains and services, the project also aims to improve basic facilities at stations and enhance terminal amenities.
Scheduled for completion by 2030, the project has been divided into three categories: immediately implementable, short-term, and long-term projects. “The decision has been made considering the growing demand from passengers,” said Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw.
