Onam Week Celebrations to Conclude with Grand Procession in Thiruvananthapuram on Sunday

Thiruvananthapuram: The Tourism Department’s Onam Week celebrations will conclude with a grand procession on Sunday. Vice-President C P Radhakrishnan will flag off the procession at 5 pm at an event to be held at Raj Bhavan. The procession will begin from Raj Bhavan and pass through Vellayambalam, Museum, Palayam and Statue before concluding at East Fort.

Around 69 floats and installations led by various government departments will showcase Kerala’s development, traditions, culture and socially relevant themes. Around 99 traditional art forms, including folk and indigenous performances, will also be part of the procession.

The inaugural pavilion will be set up near Manaveeyam Veedhi, while VVIP pavilions will be arranged near the State Public Library and University College. The judges’ point will be located near the Tourism Directorate. A special pavilion will also be arranged for foreign tourists.

Various cultural programmes have been held at 35 venues across the city as part of the week-long celebrations that began on August 24.

Traffic restrictions in the city on Sunday and Monday

Traffic arrangements will be in place in Thiruvananthapuram on Sunday in connection with the Onam Week closing procession and on Sunday and Monday in connection with the Vice-President’s visit.

To ease congestion, parking facilities have been arranged at various locations for visitors. Drivers must display their mobile phone numbers on parked vehicles.

Those travelling to the railway station or airport have been advised to plan their journeys in advance. Ambulances and other emergency vehicles should avoid the procession route.

Traffic restrictions will come into effect from 2 pm on Sunday on the roads from Kowdiar, where the procession begins, through East Fort, Vettimuricha Kotta, Thekkanada, Vazhappally, Mithranandapuram and Eenchakkal, as well as on major roads and side roads across the city.
