Supporting Alternative Media Should be Made Part of Political Action

Thiruvananthapuram: The document discussing the International Congress on Kerala Studies states that strong support should be given to existing alternative media. Collectives of local news in Kerala are a good example. Alternative news portals and organised social media interactions are important in the contemporary context. The Congress and BJP are spending huge amounts of money on social media. Even though this cannot be matched, the challenge can be met by mobilising left-wing workers.
Since the 1959 liberation struggle onwards, the mainstream media in Malayalam has adopted an anti-left stance. The left countered this through the intervention of ordinary activists in active public spheres in Kerala. Libraries, clubs, tea shops, and beedi-making centers have become discussion hubs. In this context, all left activists should engage in social media with a clear sense of direction.
The content avoided by mainstream media has been able to spread through social media. In fact, the mainstream media cannot hide everything forever. Although citizen journalism is relevant, it has limitations. Digital platforms are under the control of monopolies, and their algorithms play an important role in deciding what people see.
Since Narendra Modi came into power, press freedom has declined sharply. Media literacy is the greatest defense. Supporting and promoting alternative media should be considered a political act. The document emphasises that full support should be given to journalists who work bravely and honestly.
The media seminar, taking place on Sunday morning at 9:15 AM at Hasan Mariyakar Hall, will be inaugurated by prominent journalist Shashikumar. John Brittas MP will present the topic, and M. Swaraj will preside over the session.
