Thrissur: The State Youth Arts Festival, which transformed Thrissur, Kerala’s cultural capital, into a vibrant festival ground, concluded on a grand note. The closing ceremony was inaugurated by Leader of the Opposition V D Satheeshan, while actor Mohanlal attended as the chief guest, electrifying the young audience with his presence.

V D Satheeshan said the people of Thrissur embraced the festival wholeheartedly and turned it into a major success. In his inaugural address, he also congratulated Education Minister V Sivankutty for his role in the smooth conduct of the festival.

Satheeshan especially praised the minister for amending festival rules to allow Siya Fathima, who was unable to attend in person due to serious health issues, to participate online. Referring to this decision, Minister K Rajan, in his welcome address, said this year’s festival had created history by proving that no rule or regulation is beyond change when humanity and compassion come first. He highlighted Siya Fathima’s participation as a powerful example of resilience and determination in the face of illness.

As Mohanlal stepped onto the stage, the venue erupted in cheers. Addressing the audience, the actor referred to the discussions around his attire and said he chose to wear khadi to make everyone happy. His remarks about his moustache was met with thunderous applause.

Mohanlal noted that arts festivals are not merely platforms for performances, but spaces that nurture community bonding and social learning among children. He said such festivals help build confidence and shape personality, and advised students not to be disappointed if they did not win prizes. Arts festivals, he added, offer life experiences far beyond what textbooks can provide.

Education Minister V Sivankutty announced that significant changes would be introduced in the organization of arts festivals from next year. He said the schedules for school-level, sub-district, district, and state arts festivals would be announced at the very beginning of the academic year.
