Thiruvananthapuram: Instagram influencer and former Muslim League ward member Shimjitha has been arrested in connection with the death of 42-year-old Deepak. Shimjitha had accused Deepak of misbehaviour on a bus and shared the video of the incident on Instagram, where it quickly went viral. Deepak was later found dead at his home on Sunday, police said. He was a native of Puthiyara and was residing in Govindhapuram.

Deepak’s family has stated that he was innocent and deeply distressed over the accusations. They filed a complaint with the District Police Commissioner yesterday, urging a thorough investigation into the matter and against Shimjitha. Shimjitha, meanwhile, has said that she recorded the video after witnessing another person facing abuse. She had previously filed for anticipatory bail in connection with the case.

Shimjitha, currently held at a relative’s house in Vadakara by Mufti police, is being transferred to Kozhikode. Her medical fitness was examined at Koyilandi Taluk Hospital, and she will soon be produced at a police station within the city.

Police have seized evidence from her mobile, including the circulated video, and the original footage will be examined as part of the investigation. A lookout notice has also been issued in her name over fears that she might flee the country.
