MDMA Case: Congress Leader Not Subjected to Medical Examination; Police Accused of Trying to Shield Him

Thodupuzha: Allegations have emerged that police extended undue assistance to Congress leader Sanish George, who was arrested while allegedly using MDMA, by releasing him without subjecting him to a medical examination.

Sanish George, former Thodupuzha municipal chairperson and INTUC Thodupuzha regional chairman, was arrested by Kaliyar police on Thursday along with his friend Velamparambil Nisar Mohammed near the Ezhalloor temple on the Ezhalloor Cheruthottinkara Road. Police allegedly recovered an MDMA cover and a glass fume device used for consuming drugs from the scooter in which the two were travelling.

However, the two were released on station bail after being fined Rs 2,000. Police did not conduct a medical examination of Sanish George, leading to allegations that senior-level intervention was made to help him.

The Kaliyar SI said police had attempted to apprehend him four or five times based on confidential information.

The Thodupuzha DySP said a case had been registered for alleged MDMA use but that no medical examination had been conducted.

Sanish George told media persons that he had not used any narcotic substance and alleged that some police officers had fabricated the incident to deliberately defame him. He also alleged that Kaliyar police used pepper spray on his face.

When asked whether he had links with drug dealers, Sanish George replied that he did have contacts with such people.

The police action has drawn widespread criticism, particularly at a time when the UDF government is conducting a high-profile anti-drug campaign and promoting measures against narcotics. Critics have questioned the handling of the case involving a Congress leader.
