Thiruvananthapuram: In Kerala, a Sangh Parivar–affiliated organisation has demanded the inclusion of the RSS song “Gana Geetham” in an official Christmas celebration. The demand has been made by the Sangh Parivar–affiliated trade union Bharatiya Mazdoor Sangh (BMS) in connection with the Christmas programme scheduled to be held at the Thiruvananthapuram regional headquarters of the Postal Department on Thursday.

The BMS has claimed that the Gana Geetham is a patriotic song. In a letter submitted to the authorities, the organisation demanded the inclusion of a patriotic song sung by students during the inauguration of the Vande Bharat Express in the Christmas programme. The letter further requested permission to video-record the singing of the Gana Geetham and share the footage on social media.

The demand has drawn strong opposition from Left- and Congress-affiliated organisations, which have objected to the move.

Earlier, a controversy had erupted during the inaugural run of the Ernakulam–KSR Bengaluru Vande Bharat Express, when schoolchildren sang the RSS Gana Geetham and the Southern Railway shared a video of the performance on its official social media handle.

Southern Railway faced widespread criticism after posting the video on its official X account, describing the performance as a “patriotic song” and stating that students had filled the coaches with patriotic music during the inaugural journey. Following public criticism, the post was later withdrawn.
