Pathanamthitta: Extensive security measures, including the installation of 450 CCTV cameras, have been implemented at the Sabarimala Lord Ayyappa temple for the ongoing Mandalam -Makaravilakku pilgrimage season.
The surveillance network is a collaborative effort between the police and the Travancore Devaswom Board (TDB), which manages the shrine, an official statement confirmed on Monday.
Monitoring is carried out from specially designated control rooms managed jointly by the police and the TDB. The system ensures continuous, round -the- clock surveillance of the entire temple area. In case of emergencies or sudden crowd surges, authorities can respond immediately.
Of the total cameras, the police have installed around 90 units covering key points along the route from Chalakayam to Pandithavalam.
The remaining 345 cameras, set up by the Devaswom Board, focus on the pilgrimage path and crucial rest areas. These cameras monitor major locations, including Marakkoottam, Nadappanthal, Sopanam, the flyover, Malikappuram, and Pandithavalam.
This joint initiative between the police and the Devaswom Board, highlighting seamless information sharing, aims to create a robust security framework for the hill shrine and its surroundings, which are visited by lakhs of devotees annually. The surveillance system will help authorities manage crowds, prevent illegal activities, and carry out timely rescue operations whenever needed, the state government added.
