Sabari Rail: Kerala To Bear Half The Cost; Centre’s Nod Awaited

Thiruvananthapuram: The Kerala government has formally informed the Union Railway Ministry that it is ready to bear 50 percent of the total cost of the long-pending Angamaly–Erumeli Sabari Rail project, as part of efforts to move the project forward.

In a letter to the Railway Ministry, the state conveyed its willingness to share half of the project cost based on the revised estimate. The project had remained pending for years on the grounds of financial constraints. With the state committing to fund its share, officials expect the stalled process to resume.

The state Cabinet had earlier decided that Kerala’s share of the construction cost would be met through the Kerala Infrastructure Investment Fund Board (KIIFB). The government believes this commitment will address the Centre’s concerns over funding.

The proposed rail line is expected to improve connectivity in central Travancore and provide major relief to Sabarimala pilgrims. The route passes through Kottayam, Idukki and Pathanamthitta districts and is seen as a project that could boost regional development.

A revised cost estimate has been prepared in view of the rise in construction material prices. The state also plans to expedite land acquisition and set up a Special Purpose Vehicle in coordination with the Railways for implementing the project.

Kerala has also urged the Centre to consider the rail line as part of the Sabarimala Master Plan, highlighting its importance for pilgrimage and regional infrastructure.
