Relief for Fishermen: Kerosene Subsidy Increased to Rs 50 per Litre

Thiruvananthapuram: To provide relief to fishermen in the state, the government has increased the kerosene subsidy from Rs 25 per litre to Rs 50. This benefit will be available on kerosene allocated for fishing through Matsyafed. This step has been taken considering that the subsidy amount has not been increased in over ten years. An important decision in this regard was made during the cabinet meeting held on February 24, 2026.
The decision was implemented based on the recommendations of the Justice (Retd.) J.B. Koshy Commission report. The commission had suggested providing special tax relief or subsidies to support the fishing sector, which has been facing a crisis due to the increase in fuel prices. The government has accepted this recommendation. As part of this, the order also includes instructions to establish kerosene storage tanks, with a focus on fish landing centers. According to the Governor's order, the Fisheries Department's Special Secretary, Abdul Nassar BIS, issued the official order on March 9.
