Kollam: When Kerala State Literacy Mission coordinator Shobha visited Poothakkulam Panchayat in Kollam to encourage the president to take the lead in Plus Two equivalency exam awareness, she did not expect a surprise. . During their discussion, President S. Ammini Amma looked up and asked, almost shyly, “Can I also join…?”
Her simple yet courageous question instantly won Shobha’s admiration. Soon, Ammini Amma was officially included in the project under the Ithikkara block, embarking on a remarkable journey that would go on to inspire her entire community.
After her marriage, Ammini Amma could not continue her pre-degree studies at Kottiyam NSS College due to personal and family responsibilities. But at 57, she decided to take up her studies again, enrolling in a Plus Two equivalency program. With full support from her husband, Gopalakrishnan, and her children, she attended Sunday classes at Chathannoor GHSS, and on busy days, she prepared notes by following YouTube lessons at home.
Her dedication bore fruit spectacularly. Ammini Amma passed the Plus Two examinations with 81.67% marks, earning A+ in Sociology and Malayalam, A in History, B+ in Politics and Economics, and B in English.
Her academic success adds to a life already defined by perseverance and leadership. She spent 17 years working as a laborer in a private cashew factory, during which she became actively involved in organizational activities. In 2017, she joined the Harithakarma Sena in Poothakkulam Panchayat and was elected president in 2020, a position she continues to hold while pursuing her educational ambitions.
Her academic journey continues: Ammini Amma has enrolled for a BA in Malayalam at Sree Narayana Guru Open University, Kollam, and hopes to pursue further studies, including postgraduate degrees.
