CM Pinarayi Vijayan Writes to Prime Minister Seeking Additional LPG Supply for Kerala

Thiruvananthapuram: Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan has written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi requesting additional LPG supplies for Kerala in view of the upcoming festival season.

In the letter, the Chief Minister pointed out that the demand for cooking gas rises significantly during Ramadan, Vishu and Easter. During Ramadan, LPG consumption increases due to the preparation of Sehri and Iftar meals, while Vishu and Easter also involve extensive cooking and celebrations.

The Chief Minister noted that more than 95% of households in Kerala depend entirely on LPG for cooking, benefiting a large section of the population, including around 2.5 million Muslim families.

He also highlighted that ongoing tensions in West Asia have disrupted LPG imports and tanker movements, leading to delays in cylinder refills across the state.

Considering the situation, he urged the Central government to instruct public sector oil companies — Indian Oil Corporation, Bharat Petroleum and Hindustan Petroleum — to allocate additional LPG cylinders for Kerala for the next two months.

While the state government has introduced local distribution controls to manage the supply, CM said special support from the central government is essential to overcome the current constraints.

He added that ensuring adequate LPG availability during the festive period would help prevent hardship for households, especially economically weaker families, including beneficiaries of the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana.
