LPU Student Protests: Ensure Safety of Malayali Students, Says Pinarayi Vijayan

Thiruvananthapuram: Opposition Leader Pinarayi Vijayan said the developments at Lovely Professional University (LPU) in Punjab should be viewed with utmost seriousness. Students had taken to the streets in protest following allegations that a female student had been sexually assaulted.

However, he alleged that university founder and Chancellor and BJP MP Ashok Kumar Mittal and the management attempted to suppress the protest using the police and Sangh Parivar goons.

He called for strong protests against the alleged actions and demanded that justice be ensured through a comprehensive and transparent investigation. He also demanded an uncompromising investigation into the management’s role in the various issues raised by the students.

As classes have been suspended for 10 days following the clashes, Pinarayi Vijayan urged authorities to ensure the safety and travel arrangements of more than 1,500 Malayali students at the university.

He called for urgent intervention by the Centre and the state government to ensure that students can travel safely from Jalandhar to Delhi and from there to Keralam. He also urged the authorities to coordinate with the Railways and make arrangements for special trains or additional coaches in view of the possibility of a shortage of tickets.

Pinarayi Vijayan also called for immediate steps to address the concerns of students and their parents.
