Thrissur: Thrissur, the home turf of the late Congress stalwart K Karunakaran, has once again upheld its tradition of not electing his children, with Padmaja Venugopal — his daughter — suffering defeat in the Thrissur assembly constituency after switching sides to contest on an NDA ticket this time.

Padmaja had previously contested from the same Thrissur assembly seat on UDF tickets in both 2016 and 2021, losing on both occasions. In 2004, she contested the Mukundapuram Lok Sabha seat in the district and was defeated by Lonappan Nambadan by over a lakh votes.

Her brother K Muraleedharan has similarly faced defeat every time he has contested in Thrissur district.
