Malappuram: The Othukkungal panchayat, governed by the Muslim League, has passed a resolution against the UDF government's free Priyadarshini bus travel scheme. The resolution demands that people with higher incomes, including government employees, be excluded from the scheme.

Private bus owners and workers' organisations have also raised concerns over the scheme. Private bus services are facing a financial crisis, while bus owners, drivers, conductors, mechanics and other allied workers are facing income losses and concerns over job security.

The resolution states that it is essential to bring the financial crisis and the concerns over the survival of the private bus sector and its workers to the government's attention.

The resolution was moved by A K Khamaruddeen, chairman of the Standing Committee for Welfare Affairs.
