Onam Return Rush Intensifies as Trains, KSRTC Buses Overflow

Thiruvananthapuram: Even as the Onam celebrations begin to wind down, the rush that started weeks ago shows no signs of easing. The journey back after the festival is proving more difficult than the rush to reach home for Onam. The situation is expected to become even more challenging as people who travelled at different times return together after the Onam holidays.

The return journey has now begun following the Thiruvonam celebrations. Workers from other states, including Bengaluru, Chennai and Hyderabad, are also returning to Keralam’s major cities. Railway stations and KSRTC services are witnessing heavy crowds.

Special trains had been sanctioned months in advance to manage the rush. However, services were not increased based on the number of passengers and the actual demand.

Those returning to their workplaces and educational institutions after the holidays were not even given an opportunity to book tickets in advance. Return tickets, along with tickets for the journey to Keralam, were sold out within minutes even before Onam began. For those hoping to rely on general compartments, the situation is no better, with most trains so crowded that there is barely room to even stand.

The situation with KSRTC services is similar. Buses are running without vacant seats, and people are willing to stand for long periods simply to make their way back. Bus fares have also soared during the Onam season. KSRTC is unable to operate enough special services to address the travel crisis.
