Kozhikode: Senior Congress leader Mullappally Ramachandran has sharply criticised Vadakara MP Shafi Parambil over an on-stage clash during the ‘Puthuyuga Yatra’ in Kerala led by Leader of the Opposition V.D. Satheesan.

The incident took place at a public function in Kuttyadi where several party leaders were present on the dais. The tension reportedly arose over the order of speakers. Shafi Parambil was not included in the list of those scheduled to address the gathering, while the Kozhikode MP and former MLA Palakkal Abdulla were invited to speak. This reportedly led to visible resentment on stage.

Mullappally said it was unnecessary for leaders to engage in a confrontation in full public view and that Shafi should have shown restraint. He described the episode as a breach of discipline, especially as it unfolded in front of television cameras. According to Mullappally, he cautioned Shafi at the time to control himself.

He also alleged lapses in the organisation of the programme, stating that there was no proper control over those allowed onto the stage. Mullappally dismissed reports that he had fallen during the commotion, clarifying that he was seated on a sofa.

The episode has drawn criticism amid ongoing factional tensions within the Congress in Kerala, with observers pointing to growing group rivalries and seat-related disputes as the party conducts statewide programmes ahead of elections.
