M V Govindan Visits Relief Camp in Vagamon, Flags Lack of Basic Facilities

Idukki: CPI(M) State Secretary M V Govindan visited a relief camp in Vagamon where people affected by the recent rain-related disasters have been accommodated. He said the shortage of basic facilities at the camp was serious and alleged that the government had handled the issue with considerable negligence.

Govindan interacted with the people staying at the camp and enquired about their problems and immediate requirements. He said the government had failed to provide adequate facilities and ensure the availability of essential supplies for those affected by the disaster.

“In several places, even food and drinking water have not been made available,” he said.

Govindan said the government’s responsibility did not end with moving people who had been forced to leave their homes to relief camps. He stressed that the authorities must ensure safe accommodation and provide essential facilities, including food and drinking water.

Essential supplies were distributed to people at the camp under the leadership of the CPI(M). Govindan said party workers would continue to take part in efforts to ensure that disaster-affected people received the assistance they required.

Heavy rain over the past few days had triggered landslides and widespread waterlogging in several parts of Idukki, causing extensive damage. Houses, roads and other public infrastructure were affected.

Families living in vulnerable areas in the hilly regions were moved to safer locations as a precaution.
