Thiruvananthapuram: CPI(M) State Secretary MV Govindan described the death of R Nallakannu, a prominent communist leader and freedom fighter from Tamil Nadu, as an irreplaceable loss for the entire country. He hailed Nallakannu as a leader known for his unwavering sense of justice and lifelong dedication to the growth of the state and the rights of ordinary people.

He recalled Nallakannu’s tireless activism, noting that even after being arrested in the Nellai Conspiracy Case and brutally beaten by police, he never lost his fighting spirit. At the age of 85, he successfully fought in court to stop sand mining in the Thamirabarani River, securing a ban. Govindan said his determined political life serves as a “textbook” for the new generation. The late Karunanidhi had once remarked that Nallakannu was like one of the eyes of Tamil Nadu along with Periyar, a testament to his widespread recognition.

Known for his simple lifestyle, Nallakannu gave almost everything he owned to the party and lived on a modest monthly allowance. He spent much of his youth in jail or in hiding, always raising his voice against oppression faced by Dalits and minority communities.

In his condolence message, MV Govindan said, “His demise is a great loss to the entire communist movement. I join his comrades, family, and friends in mourning his death.”
