Kozhikode: Police have registered a case against a Muslim League activist after a young man died by suicide following the circulation of a video accusing him of sexual harassment on a bus. The case has been filed against Shimjitha Mustafa, a Muslim League worker and former panchayat member, by the Medical College Police. She has been charged with abetment of suicide under Section 108 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), a non-bailable offence.

The parents of Deepak had submitted complaints to the City Police Commissioner and the District Collector. Based on this, a police team led by Medical College Inspector Baiju K Jose visited the family home in Govindapuram and recorded statements from Deepak’s mother Kanyaka, relatives, and friends. The case was registered following this inquiry.

Police suspect that Shimjitha Mustafa is absconding, and there are indications that she may have fled abroad. Investigators are also considering recording statements from fellow passengers on the bus and from the bus staff as part of the ongoing investigation.
