Thiruvananthapuram: Munnar, one of Kerala’s most popular tourist destinations, is set to be declared an International Responsible Tourist Destination, with the formal announcement scheduled for December. Preparations for the project are already underway.

The initiative, led by the state Tourism Department, aims to blend ecological protection with sustainable tourism growth. It focuses on preserving Munnar’s biodiversity while creating employment opportunities for local communities.

As part of the project, single- use plastic will be completely banned. The plan includes transforming Munnar into a plastic- free, zero -carbon tourism zone, setting a model for responsible travel practices.

The government has allocated 50 lakh rupees for the initial phase of the project, which will be implemented and monitored by the Responsible Tourism Mission Society. Community participation is central to the project’s design.

Women- friendly tourism and village -based travel experiences will be key components. Tourists will be encouraged to engage with the local culture through homestays, farm and agri- tourism activities, and traditional village visits.

Handicrafts, local art forms, traditional crafts, and homely food will be showcased to create a distinctive and immersive tourism experience. These elements are also expected to boost the livelihoods of local artisans and families.

Training sessions will be conducted for Responsible Tourism unit representatives, community tour leaders, homestay operators, farm tourism stakeholders, serviced villa owners, and those involved in local cuisine. The aim is to provide high-quality, authentic hospitality while empowering the community.

Officials say the project will help position Munnar as a global example of sustainable tourism that respects both nature and people.
