Mundakkai and Chooralmala Survivors to Receive New Homes Tomorrow at 11 AM

Kalpatta: The landslide-ravaged villages of Mundakkai and Chooralmala are set to rise again in Kalpetta town in just two days. The first phase inauguration of the survival township will be held on Sunday. At 11 a.m., Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan will hand over the house keys and land ownership documents to 178 families who completely lost their homes and land. Minister K Rajan will preside over the function.

Each family will receive a 1,000-square-foot house built to withstand natural disasters, along with seven cents of land. The foundation stone for the township was laid by the Chief Minister on March 27, 2025. Construction began on April 16, and the houses are being handed over on the 320th day since work commenced. More than 2,000 workers labored day and night to complete the first phase.

Infrastructure facilities including a compound wall, gate, 11.42 kilometers of roads, an underground power distribution network, a 950,000-liter drinking water storage tank, and sewage treatment plants have also been completed.

A total of 410 houses are being built on 64.47 hectares of land acquired by the government. The roofing work of 304 houses has been completed. All houses are expected to be handed over by April. Facilities such as a health center, anganwadi, community center, public market, landslide memorial, open theatre, and football ground will also be constructed.

Survivors and the public are eagerly awaiting the inauguration of this project, considered a global model for rehabilitation. The venue is fully prepared. On the night of July 29, 2024, a massive landslide at Punjimattam in Meppadi, Wayanad, wiped out Mundakkai and Chooralmala. A total of 298 people lost their lives in the disaster. The government’s promise to rehabilitate the affected families together is now becoming a reality.
