Congress Will Decide CM, Not Coalition Partners: M M Hassan

New Delhi: Amid continuing uncertainty within the Congress over the selection of Kerala’s next Chief Minister, senior Congress leader and former KPCC president M M Hassan indirectly criticised the Muslim League, asserting that the decision on the Chief Minister rests solely with the Congress high command.

Speaking to reporters in New Delhi, where senior leaders have gathered for discussions, Hassan said coalition partners cannot decide who should lead the government. “The Congress alone will decide who becomes Chief Minister. Coalition partners may express their views if asked, but the final decision will be taken by the high command,” he stated.

Hassan’s remarks came in response to questions regarding Muslim League's reported support for V D Satheesan in the leadership race.

He added that unusual political situations often require unusual decisions and pointed out that the party leadership has the authority to consult any senior leader at any time. According to Hassan, the process of choosing a Chief Minister is still within a reasonable timeframe despite criticism over delays.

The veteran leader also noted that individuals who did not contest elections have previously gone on to become Chief Ministers, adding that such developments are not uncommon within the Congress party.

Referring to the ongoing debate surrounding leadership contenders, Hassan said opinions were emerging in favour of multiple leaders and that the high command would take a final decision after considering all factors. He also accused the media and social media platforms of unnecessarily amplifying the controversy surrounding the Chief Minister selection process.
