Malappuram: A case has been registered against a local Congress leader in Ponnani Municipality in Malappuram district following serious allegations made by a woman, including misappropriation of funds raised for her son’s medical treatment and an attempt to outrage her modesty.
According to the complaint filed by a resident of Eeswaramangalam, her 28-year-old son, a lorry driver, had sustained serious leg injuries in a road accident involving a bus around three months ago. He was undergoing treatment at a private hospital in Thrissur when KV Zakkeer, the Ponnani Block Secretary of the Congress party, approached the family offering help.
As per the complaint, Zakkeer collected donations for the young man’s treatment through Google Pay, both via his own account and through the accounts of three of the youth’s friends. While the money collected through the friends’ accounts was duly accounted for and shared with the family, the amount received through Zakkeer’s personal Google Pay account was allegedly neither handed over to the family nor paid to the hospital.
The complainant further alleged that Zakkeer refused to share the account statement despite repeated requests. Trusting Zakkeer's assurances, the family had opted for private treatment, which led to considerable financial strain. The surgery was eventually completed with the support of local residents, and the family remains dependent on community aid for the youth’s continued care.
In a more disturbing allegation, the woman also accused Zakkeer of attempting to outrage her modesty while she was alone at home. Ponnani police have registered a case and launched an investigation. The accused is currently absconding.
