Thiruvananthapuram: CPI(M) General Secretary M A Baby has alleged that the intensive revision of the voter list is a political project being implemented by the BJP and RSS through the Election Commission. Addressing a press conference, he said the party would organise a broad campaign against the Election Commission’s attempts to assume the authority to determine citizenship.

He asserted that the CPI(M) would ensure that no eligible voter is excluded from the electoral rolls, while also remaining vigilant to prevent the insertion of bogus voters through collusion between the BJP and the Election Commission.

M A Baby further criticised the BJP-led Union government for using the winter session of Parliament as an opportunity to push through several anti-people bills without adequate debate. He pointed out that the four labour codes have been notified, and the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act has been replaced by the V B Gramji Act. He said that the Seed Bill and the Electricity Amendment Bill are in the pipeline.

He also criticised the passage of a bill allowing 100 per cent foreign direct investment in the insurance sector, approved by the Union Cabinet during the winter session. In addition, he expressed concern over the government permitting private and foreign corporations to enter the nuclear energy sector, warning that opening such a strategic sector to private companies would be disastrous.

According to M A Baby, the BJP is deliberately undermining the functioning of Parliament. He said legislative scrutiny over the executive is an integral part of parliamentary democracy, and denying this weakens democratic structures and strengthens authoritarian tendencies.

He also raised alarm over the increasing attacks on Muslim and Christian minorities in the country, stating that Hindutva communal organisations are behind them. The inaction of BJP governments, he said, is deliberate and intended to enable such attacks. These developments, he added, are part of the RSS–BJP agenda to dismantle secularism and establish a Hindu Rashtra.

M A Baby demanded the immediate restoration of statehood to Jammu and Kashmir, along with the full reinstatement of democratic rights for its people.
