Heart Transplant at Kottayam Medical College Succeeds; Krishnalal's Gift of Life Reaches Arun of Kumarakom

Kottayam: A heart transplant surgery performed at Kottayam Government Medical College has been completed successfully, giving a new lease of life to Arun, a resident of Kumarakom. The heart belonged to Krishnalal, a 33-year-old from Thiruvananthapuram who suffered brain death while undergoing treatment at KIMS Hospital following a road accident. Flown in by special air ambulance, the heart arrived at Kottayam at around 3 pm on Sunday.

The complex, hours-long surgery was performed by a medical team led by renowned cardiac surgeon Dr T K Jayakumar. The Rs 14 lakh required for Arun's surgery was raised under the initiative of Minister V N Vasavan, who remained at the Medical College with the patient's family until the operation was concluded.

Krishnalal's family had consented to donate five of his organs — his heart, both kidneys, liver, and eyes — in a gesture that will bring renewed life to multiple recipients. This is the fifth organ donation in Kerala within the span of two months.

The successful completion of this intricate procedure has once again underscored the capability of government medical colleges in the state. That a surgery of this complexity — one that would cost lakhs at private hospitals — was carried out at a public institution is being widely seen as a testament to the strength of the LDF government's health policy and the robustness of Kerala's public healthcare infrastructure.
