Thiruvananthapuram: The India Meteorological Department has forecast isolated thunderstorms accompanied by lightning across Kerala over the next three days, prompting the State Disaster Management Authority to issue a comprehensive public safety advisory. Authorities have warned that lightning poses serious risks to human life, livestock, electrical infrastructure, and home appliances connected to power lines.

At the first sign of dark clouds or lightning, move immediately into a secure building. Keep windows and doors shut during thunderstorms, and avoid standing near them. Stay away from walls and floors as much as possible, and disconnect all electrical appliances from the mains. Avoid using landline telephones during lightning — mobile phones are safe to use. Do not bathe or collect water from taps during a storm, as lightning current can travel through pipes.

Never shelter under trees or park vehicles beneath them during lightning. If you are caught outdoors with no building nearby, crouch low with feet together, tuck your head between your knees, and curl into a ball to minimise exposure. Cyclists, motorcyclists, and tractor riders must stop and seek shelter in a building until the storm passes. Children and adults should avoid terraces, open grounds, and elevated locations during thunderstorms.

Fishing, boating, and all water-based activities must be suspended at the first sight of storm clouds. Head to shore immediately. Do not stand on a boat's deck during lightning, and stop casting nets or lines. Do not enter any water body — for swimming or fishing — during a thunderstorm.

Secure loose objects that could be blown over by strong winds. Do not fly kites. Do not venture to terraces or open areas to retrieve laundry during a storm. Pets should not be left tethered in open areas; however, do not go out to untie or move them once lightning has begun. Installing lightning conductors on buildings and surge protectors for electrical equipment is recommended as a long-term precaution.

Lightning strike victims carry no residual electric charge — it is completely safe to touch and assist them immediately. The first 30 seconds after a strike are critical. Administer first aid without hesitation and seek medical help urgently.
