Thiruvananthapuram: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast extremely heavy rainfall in several parts of Kerala, issuing red and yellow alerts across multiple districts. Kozhikode, Wayanad, Kannur, and Kasaragod districts are under red alert for Friday, while Malappuram will join these four districts on Saturday, taking the total number of red alert districts to five. The alerts come in response to predictions of extremely intense rain over short durations, which could result in flash floods and other hazards.
Yellow alerts have also been declared in five districts today—Ernakulam, Idukki, Thrissur, Palakkad, and Malappuram—indicating the possibility of isolated heavy rainfall. These alerts will remain in place tomorrow in Ernakulam, Idukki, Thrissur, and Palakkad districts.
According to the IMD, the pattern of rainfall suggests the likelihood of sudden and intense downpours, which could cause flash floods, landslides, and mudslides. Urban areas and low-lying regions may experience waterlogging. If the rain continues over the coming days, the risks of landslips and related disasters could increase. The IMD has urged both the public and government agencies to remain vigilant and take necessary precautions.
Red alerts have also been issued for Kannur and Kasaragod on July 20. Meanwhile, yellow alerts are in place for Pathanamthitta, Kottayam, Idukki, Kozhikode, and Wayanad on the same day. Kannur and Kasaragod will remain under yellow alert on July 21.
The weather department continues to closely monitor the situation as monsoon activity intensifies across the state.
