Orange Alert in Six Districts, Aruvikkara Dam Shutters to Be Raised Further

Thiruvananthapuram: The India Meteorological Department has forecast widespread rain across Keralam, Mahe and Lakshadweep until July 2, with isolated very heavy rainfall likely between June 28 and July 1. Thundershowers and strong winds of 40-50 km/h, gusting up to 60 km/h at times, are also expected in isolated spots.

According to the latest weather warning, Kollam, Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, Kottayam, Ernakulam and Idukki districts are likely to witness isolated spells of moderate thundershowers and strong winds of up to 50 km/h over the next three hours. An orange alert has been declared for these six districts for this three-hour window.

All other districts are likely to see moderate thundershowers and winds of up to 40 km/h, the weather department said. In Kottayam district, where moderate to heavy rain and strong winds are expected, people have been advised to avoid unnecessary travel and stay in safe areas.

Aruvikkara Dam shutters to be raised

The Meteorological Department has issued a yellow alert for Thiruvananthapuram district in view of heavy rain. Owing to strong inflow, shutters 2 to 5 of the Aruvikkara dam will be raised by an additional 10 cm each at 4 pm today (June 28). This takes the total rise in shutter height to 80 cm, including the 40 cm raised the previous day. Additional District Magistrate A Nisha has asked residents living near the dam and along both banks of the river to remain vigilant.
