Thiruvananthapuram: The India Meteorological Department has warned that pre-monsoon rains will gain strength in the coming days, issuing Yellow Alerts for several Kerala districts from Thursday through Saturday. The State Disaster Management Authority has urged the public to remain alert given the accompanying risk of lightning and strong winds.
Yellow Alerts — indicating expected rainfall of 64.5 to 115.5 mm within 24 hours — have been declared as follows: Kannur and Kasaragod on Thursday; Pathanamthitta, Idukki, and Wayanad on Friday; and Alappuzha, Kottayam, and Ernakulam on Saturday.
While the continuing rains will provide relief from the intense heat that has gripped the state, the SDMA has cautioned that the risk of lightning is highest between 2 pm and 10 pm, and those handling electrical equipment must exercise particular care during this window. Strong winds may also cause trees to fall and damage electricity poles, and the public is urged to remain vigilant.
Fishing is currently not restricted in coastal areas, but coastal residents are advised to take precautionary measures. The Meteorological Centre said it is closely monitoring weather developments and will issue timely advisories as conditions evolve
